That's what a Specialist does. RTA gives the people already connected to rural communities the knowledge, tools, and relationships to walk alongside grocers—and help strengthen what they have today, so they're better positioned for whatever comes next.
Each level opens only to graduates of the level before it. Start where you are.
Level 1
Transition Specialist
Every Specialist starts here. Taught by the Rural Grocery Initiative at Kansas State University, Level 1 is the only national training program dedicated to rural grocery succession support.
Level 2
Advanced Specialist
Level 2 is about learning how to work with a grocer before transition is on the table—strengthening the business, improving its value, and helping the owner prepare for what comes next.

Rural Transition Academy is a learning institution geared at stabilizing rural healthy food access by offering training courses, technology, and other resources that work on business transition success from both long-term and short-term perspectives.

All rural areas in Kansas, Western Missouri, and the entire United States that have local food access and want to keep it. A global market for both Specialists and Grocers is a matter of time.

Meet the founder
Former rural grocery store owner (Cecil K's Hometown Market, Holton, KS, 2018 to 2023); startup grocery mentor for K-State's Rural Grocery Initiative beginning 2021; architect and lead facilitator of the Rural Grocery Transition Specialist program since its founding in 2022, the only national training program dedicated to rural grocery succession support.
In 2017, Carly co-founded Cecil K's Hometown Market, a full-service rural grocery store in Holton, Kansas, named after the great-grandfather she shared with her cousin and business partner. She took a paragraph of a vision and roughly a million dollars through business planning, construction, and full grocery store design, launching in February 2018.
The store navigated a global pandemic in 2020, opened a second location in 2022, and at the end of 2023 Carly navigated her own exit from the business. The heart of her work is improving the average quality of life on this planet.
